1. Analyze your keywords, and see who is currently #1 in the search engines with your keywords.
2. Optimize your website (if it's not optimized already) and submit your website.
3. Wait to see where your site is listed.
4. Re-optimize and re-submit if the first submission didn't produce top rankings.

In some cases, it is almost impossible to get top rankings on certain keywords. So, expanding your keywords to a phrase will boost your rankings. Instead of "Telephones Oklahoma" you may want to use "Cordless Telephones Oklahoma" if you specialize in cordless telephones.

Now that my site's up, why hasn't anyone been to it?
The answer is because your site isn't listed in the search engines.
The search engines are the tools on the internet that list websites by subject. So, if you were to look for a website about telephones in Oklahoma, you'd type in "Telephones Oklahoma" in the search engine.

I submitted my site to search engines, but my site doesn't show up when I type in my keywords?
That's because your website hasn't been optimized with your keywords. For instance, if you want your website to show up under the "Telephones Oklahoma" keywords, those keywords have to be on your web page. Furthermore, they have to be repeated serveral times and on all the pages of your website. It isn't suggested to have more than 25 keywords, with 3 as your primary keywords.

Why do some search engines offer faster rankings if I pay them?
Typically, it takes 6 to 8 weeks to get your site listed in a search engine's directory. If you don't want to wait, some search engines offer a service to list your site within a week if you pay them a fee.

Why do some search engines require me to pay to be listed in their directory?
The internet is changing rapidly, and search engines have realized that without them, no one would ever be able to find a website! So, they decided that if you want your site listed in their directory, you have to pay a submission fee.

Are some search engines better than others?
The answer is no. A search engine is rated on its popularity. Popular search engines will have more visitors searching than less popular ones. However, if your site is in a niche market like law, or biochemicals; then you would also be wise to submit your site to search engines in those markets as well.
